In June 2007 Project was officially closed, activities suspended, and all project equipment has been passed from UNDP to the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology.
At the last Steering Committee meeting both Minister of Education and Minister of Communications and Information Technologies have agreed and came to common position on the need to further support the project, since AzNET have developed valuable and very important capacity both from technical and human resources points of view, that are crucial and needed for smooth integration of ICT in education.
Considering the impossibility to further keep AzNET neither under UNDP funds and authority, nor the government, ministers addressed international donor organizations to support AzNET for one more year, until the start of the next “State Program on Informatization of Education 2008-2012”.
Relief International (RI) – an American NGO based in California, was the first who agreed to provide financial and administrative support to the Project. Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies has supported RI by leasing Project equipment, office space and inter-city communication lines free of charge. Ministry of Education, in its turn, expressed their interest in prolongation of Project activities. So, currently all AzNET activities are done under Relief International authority in close cooperation with Ministry of Education.
