AzNET Project

On 27 May 2004 the Caspian B room of the Hyatt Regency Hotel hosted a ceremony of signing a project document on "Internet Access and Infrastructure Development for research, educational and civil society development purposes". The project document has been signed by:

  • Minister of Communication and Information Technologies Mr. Ali Abbasov, on behalf of the Government of Azerbaijan;
  • United Nations Resident Coordinator, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative Mr. Marco Borsotti;
  • Open Society Institute - Assistance Foundation (OSI - AF) Executive Director Mr. Farda Asadov, and
  • Executive Director of Azerbaijan Research and Educational Network Association (AZRENA) Mr. Rasim Alguliyev.

The project is prepared in line with the National ICT Strategy and will be implemented by Government of Azerbaijan, OSI - AF, UNDP and AZRENA. Click here for more information about the funders.

The total budget of the three year project is 1,286,000 US$ out of which OSI-AF will cover 586,000$, UNDP and AZRENA each - 350,000$.

The project is directed on amplification, expansion and provision of conditions for further steady growth of the national academic, research and educational and community information networks in Azerbaijan. The objectives of the Project are coordination of efforts of all the parties concerned from various sectors including those of educational, science, ICT, civil society and noncommercial and profitless public sector background. The Project will facilitate and streamline data both within educational and academic sectors of the country as well as with their foreign colleagues enabling expansion of information exchange between regions and interested parties both inside and outside Azerbaijan. Another important feature of the project is its consolidating nature since all the key players will concert their efforts in the respective sector.
